Researchers at Chalmers University develop new technology to recycle batteries

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed new technology to recycle used batteries using hydrometallurgy. The hydrometallurgical process allows extracting clean basic materials that will be reused in batteries. Given the need to recycle an increasing amount of batteries according to EU legal requirements and the limited number of resources available in Europe, this new process will be crucial for future battery use.

The Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden has been working with the battery manufacturer Northvolt since 2016 to develop a series of steps to be followed in the hydrometallurgical process to recycle used batteries in the country. The research performed by Chalmers University will therefore enable Sweden to recycle lithium-ion batteries in connection with the production process.
